300 people came to the second RTMC held at Camp Oakes and brought 100 telescopes with them. Amongst the featured speakers were Tom Cave on the history of amateur telescopes in England and Ben Mayer who spoke of his prediscovery photographs of Nova Cygni and his blink comparator made from two slide projectors. Also Jeff Schroeder (then a high school student from Pomona) spoke about his two year project to grind an 11-inch f/16.3 refractor lens. 57 telescopes were entered for Merit Awards. The "Best Telescope Overall" was awarded to Gerrard Logan for his 11-inch f/55 Maksutov. Doug Berger won an award for his 16-1/2 inch relector while Denni Frerichs (Medlock) won an award for her 4 1/4-inch f/3.4. Also, Steve Kufeld (later developer of the Telrad) won an award for mechincal and electrical exellence for his 6" f/5 telescope.
